INSIGHTEC’S MRgFUS TECHNOLOGY
MR guided Focused Ultrasound combines two proven technologies - High intensity focused ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
Ultrasound is sound waves with frequencies which are higher than those audible to humans and has been used for decades for diagnostic purposes. The frequencies used for diagnostic medical imaging are generally in the range of 1 to 18 MHz. With INSIGHTEC technology, ultrasound is used therapeutically to treat various diseases. The frequencies used for high intensity focused ultrasound are in the range of 220KHz to 680KHz. Ultrasound waves safely pass through tissue and bone. Only where the waves converge is the tissue heated to temperatures high enough to cause thermal ablation, destroying the target cells.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses magnetic fields and radio waves to form detailed images of the anatomy . The technique is widely used in hospitals for medical diagnosis, staging of disease and follow-up without exposure to ionizing radiation. INSIGHTEC’s MRgFUS uses focused ultrasound to ablate the target tissue guided by MR imaging. MR imaging provides high resolution imaging for patient-specific treatment planning and real-time thermometry for temperature monitoring throughout the treatment.
HOW IT WORKS
For each of the clinical applications, the treating physician defines a region of treatment and the system creates a treatment plan accordingly. During treatment, ultrasound beams are focused to a focal point to heat and ablate the targeted tissue. The treatment is guided by MRI which provides high resolution images of the target and adjacent structures as well as continuous temperature monitoring. The temperature data is analyzed to determine the cumulative thermal impact on the tissue. If necessary, parameters can be adjusted to ensure optimal response.
