INSIGHTEC AT THE 2016 INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON FOCUSED ULTRASOUND
Kudos to the FUS Foundation team for an extremely valuable learning experience at the 5th International Symposium on Focused Ultrasound, which was held August 28 – September 1, 2016 in Bethesda.
The following is a recap of the event, summarizing some key highlights.
A significant message that was communicated at the event was the importance of sharing data and fostering collaboration in order to drive widespread adoption of focused ultrasound.
For those who could not attend the symposium, there was a live streaming option where all lectures were broadcasted during the entire symposium.
The Symposium opened with the 10th Anniversary Gala Reception and Awards. INSIGHTEC sponsored the event and Kobi Vortman, INSIGHTEC’s founder, presented Memorial Awards in honor of Motti Zisser and Ferenc Jolesz.
Motti Zisser, a major player in Israel's business community and former controlling shareholder of Elbit Imaging Ltd, passed away this year. Motti was a great believer, supporter, investor and ambassador of InSightec’s vision and dream to help millions of people in need while improving healthcare quality and minimizing trauma and morbidity.
Ferenc Jolesz, the father of modern day image-guided therapy, passed away at the end of 2014. Dr. Jolesz had a career that spanned over 30 years at Brigham and Women’s and Harvard Medical School and he distinguished himself through cutting edge research in basic and clinical neuroscience, magnetic resonance imaging and image-guided therapy.
There was a lot of buzz around the FDA approval for INSIGHTEC’s Exablate Neuro for Essential Tremor and the publication of the pivotal trial results in NEJM. William Jeffrey Elias, MD, the lead investigator from the University of Virginia's Department of Neurosurgery, presented the study results.
The scientific program with daily lectures explored preclinical and clinical applications of focused ultrasound to treat a wide range of disorders including essential tremor, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, epilepsy, bone tumors, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, soft tissue tumors, brain tumors and hypertension.
Beyond the scientific presentations and critical panel discussions, highlights included Greg Simon discussing Vice President Biden’s Cancer Moonshot initiative and John Grisham's signing of The Tumor.
Cocktail events included The Evening Poster Session and Young Investigator Spotlight, an exhibition of scientific posters where students gave in-depth explanations of their research. Additionally, Maurice Ferre, MD, INSIGHTEC’s CEO, presented INSIGHTEC’s vision at the Focused Ultrasound Showcase.
